The Hufflepuff commonroom had quickly become one of Elise’s favourite places in the castle. It was a nice place to hang out. It was comfortable there, and there were a lot of nice people. Though even as she had met a lot of Hufflepuffs, she hadn’t really met many people of the other houses yet. She thought it was about time to change that.

So the Belgian headed to the common room for all the exchange students. It was surprisingly quiet there. Perhaps most preferred the common room of their own house. She knew how the several houses rivalled with each other. Some would let that hold them back from making contact with someone from a different house in the first place.

Not Elise though, she was a firm believer in not judging someone before you’ve met them. So when she spotted a Slytherin sitting all alone she didn’t hesitate in heading over. She hadn’t heard much good about the house, but really, could it be that bad? There were less enjoyable people in every house, and maybe there just happened to be a few more of them in Slytherin. Though that didn’t mean there wasn’t anyone nice in the house.

She sat down in the chair next to him. “Mind if I join you?”

He was starting to come here more often. It really was quieter than his own common room; the people here seemed to treat this place as if it were the library. He didn't know how long it was going to last, but Lovino was going to take advantage while it was still around. Plus, not a lot of people came here, so he felt no guilt in claiming almost all of the couch for his stuff. The only open space was next to him, which in hindsight was actually a bad idea for someone who didn't want to deal with people.

Blinking and looking up as a girl sat next him, he resisted the urge to scowl at the fact she was a Hufflepuff. The only other Hufflepuff he had dealt with had nearly destroyed the room, and he wasn't inclined to give the rest of them a chance. However, this one was a girl - a rather pretty girl at that. So he supposed he could be nice to her for now. "I don't mind at all."

He gave her a smile, infusing it with all of the confidence he didn't really have. Cute girls were worth being confident over, especially when they choose the spot right next to him instead of any other spot. It was nice and certainly ego boosting.

Judging by the state of the couch, the other had been here for a while already. Elise had just finished most of her work for class before coming here, but she hadn’t forgotten to bring something to busy herself with in case people weren’t feeling like talking to her.

Elise returned the smile the Slytherin gave her. Well look at that, he was actually pretty cute when he smiled. Much better than the frown she spotted on his face earlier.

Making herself comfortable in her seat, Elise grabbed her copy of Advanced Potions Making, along with some parchment and a quill to make notes. Despite that she’d probably end up making the notes in the book itself when she actually needed it in class. She was aware of the fact that this book was only required for sixth and seventh years, but Elise hadn’t been able to resist getting it when she went shopping for the new school year. It couldn’t hurt to at least read it before her sixth year. And try one, maybe two potions. Or three.

“How do you like Hogwarts so far?” She asked, trying to strike up a conversation. Though she was also genuinely curious. She wondered where he was from. There were people from all over the world here, so it seemed. She had seen a few familiar faces from Beauxbatons already. And her brother, that certainly had been a surprise. The diversity in the students was interesting to see.

Meeting New People [Lovino] Empty
PostSubject: Re: Meeting New People [Lovino]   Meeting New People [Lovino] Icon_minitimeWed Oct 12, 2011 6:18 am

He noted with approval that she took out a potions book to work on, rather than some other subject. Sure, she could have been doing it to get it out of the way for what she liked more, but she wasn't complaining about it nor she was making a disgusted face at the book (both things he was sure Daniel had done at some point). "Hm? Ah, so far it's good enough." He shrugged, not entirely sure what to say to her.

Lovino fidgeted with his quill slightly, starting to feel nervous. He couldn't help but wonder why she was sitting next to him when there was so much space available to her, and why she wanted to talk to him as well. He clamped down on the questions though, not wanting to sound like an idiot with security issues. Which he technically was but this girl didn't need to hear about that or even know the slightest bit about it.

Forcing himself to stop, he focused his attention onto his Transfiguration book and concentrated on getting this homework done. "What's your name?" He wondered, relaxing slightly as he actually started to work. It was a bit sad that work - especially work for a subject he didn't particularly like - was enough to make him relax.

Elise nodded at him. “I think it’s quite nice here.” Elise noticed him fidgeting a bit nervously. Was she making him uncomfortable? What if she had disturbed him, but didn’t want to say it out of politeness? She decided to just focus on her book for now. She shouldn’t bother him too much if she remained quiet.

She flipped through the book, looking for an interesting recipe. She let her eye fall on a certain page. Elixir to Induce Euphoria, that sounded fun. She always liked making elixirs, they were sweet and often had a nice scent. She took another book out of her bag on potion ingredients and started to flip through it to read up on the ingredients that she would need.

When the other asked for her name she looked up again. Continuing the conversation like that couldn’t just be out of politeness. If he minded her sitting here he could’ve just ignored her. So maybe he really didn’t mind. “My name is Elise van Rijn,” She introduced herself. “What’s yours?”

Taking small deep breaths as he watched her, he forced himself to calm down. There were no deeper meanings to this encounter, nothing he should be worrying himself over. But he was still worrying because damn it, he didn't like not knowing why! There had to be some reason a pretty girl had come over to him while he was doing his work. Then again, she was a Hufflepuff that he hadn't seen in this room before; maybe she was just trying to meet new people and he was the only one by himself.

Or she saw him all by himself and pitied him for being friendless. Not that he was! He had plenty of friends. He just... he just couldn't take them into the foreign exchange room because they were people who have been going to this school since the beginning. But Lovino definitely had friends, he didn't have to worry about having some blond girl's pity.

Rather, having Elise's pity. "Beautiful name for a beautiful girl." He said, giving her another smile. And yes, flirting was practically a default at this point. At least, with certain people. "I'm Lovino Vargas. It's a pleasure to meet you Signorina Elise." He leaned back in his seating, still acting more confident than he really had a right to be. But he doubted she would notice that bit.

A small blush appeared on her cheeks when he gave her that compliment. Elise didn’t get a lot of comments like that. She didn’t think of herself as exceptionally pretty, and more than once somebody had described her as rather plain looking. Yes, she had flirted before, but no, nothing had ever really come out of it. She wasn’t sure how to respond to this. In the end she just settled for a small giggle. “Merci. Nice to meet you too.”

Elise started to feel a bit self-conscious with his eyes on her like that. He certainly didn’t seem to lack confidence. That wasn’t to say that she didn’t enjoy his attention. Because she did. Like any other girl, she did like getting compliments. She just wasn’t as experienced as some with responding to them. She made herself a bit more comfortable in her chair. Just relax and enjoy it, she told herself.

Signora, that was Italian, right? Better than guessing she might as well check and be sure. “So you are Italian?” She inquired, hoping that her limited knowledge of other languages didn’t make her look like a fool. Though seeing as Italy was known as one of the countries of love, his flirtatious attitude started to make a bit more sense.

He relaxed at the blush, glad that she seemed receptive the flirting. Otherwise he would have been left floundering, unsure of what to do. Occasionally he came across a girl who thought his flirting to be a personal insult and she would fling barbs at him, trying to make him hurt for daring to flirt with her. Couldn't he see that she had no desire to deal with his misogynistic words? Women like that scared him.

His smile grew as he banished those thoughts from his head, and he glanced at her book again, taking note of the potion she seemed to be working on. She didn't look like a sixth year, and he hadn't seen her in his potions class - as the number of students who continued on after fifth year was so small, all of the houses were put together in the same potions class in sixth year. At least, here they were. An odd system but he supposed that it worked.

"Yes, I am. And you, signorina?" He wondered, turning back to his work and actually getting something done. Lovino didn't want it to look like he was unused to the attention of pretty girls, which he was sure had been the impression until this point in time. Not the best thing in the world to do.

Elise tried to get the blush off her cheeks. She didn’t want to come across as a shy girl who went red at every compliment she got. Because she actually was pretty easy with talking to people. It was just when it came to flirting that she was a bit inexperienced. She caught him glancing at her book. She looked at the pages he had open in his own book. It seemed to be transfiguration, but not the book she had for it. He must be in sixth or seventh year then, she figured. And assuming Lovino took potions, it would seem a little strange to him seeing her work with this book, even if she wasn’t in his class.

“I’m from Belgium,” She said. “Italy seems nice. I heard it’s really pretty there,” She had seen a thing or two about Italy from travel ads, but never actually been there. It seemed so much nicer there than rainy old Belgium for a change. Not to mention the Italian cuisine had quite the reputation.

If she was supposed to go off Lovino’s attitude towards her, she didn’t know why Slytherins had such a bad reputation around here. He was actually really nice to her. He looked a bit serious now and then, yes, but most of the time he had been smiling at her. Then again, he was flirting with her, something that wouldn’t have a lot of effect if he acted like a dick.

Looking away from her face when he noticed that she looked a little uncomfortable with the attention. "Do you enjoy making potions?" He wondered, knowing the answer but wanting to make conversation with her. If he was really lucky he could actually become friends with this girl. For a Hufflepuff, she wasn't that bad. Certainly not as bad as Raivis. Plus, she seemed to be a potions girl, which immediately raised Lovino's opinion of her. Anyone who liked potions - even if Lovino hated their guts - got a positive mark in his book just for that.

He made a soft noise, nodding slightly. "Belgium must be a wonderful place, if it can produce women like you." He smiled and played with the edge of the page he was on in his book. "Italy is a nice place. At least, the scenery is. Most of the people are nice as well, though there are some assholes. Of course, that's true of all countries." And Lovino was making a conversation with someone. His grandfather would be so proud, especially after he saw just who the conversation was with.

Leaning back in his seat, Lovino stretched and quickly caught the book as it started falling off of his lap. Glancing at his assignment again, the Italian frowned slightly and got to work on it, knowing that homework was technically more important than flirting with the pretty Belgium woman.

Elise nodded and smiled when the other brought up potions. “I do. A lot of people seem to have a hard time with them, but I’m pretty good at it,” With how much time she spent in the kitchen, it wasn’t surprising that she was good at potions as well. Cooking and potion making were basically the same in her eyes, especially since she often added a little magic touch to her recipes. Whether you managed to make a successful dish or potion all depends on the right ingredients and the skill and precision of the cook. “In class we haven’t actually started in this book yet, but I want to try something a little more challenging,” She said as she glanced at the page she had open.

Again with the compliments. She couldn’t deny that she liked it, but it also made her wonder just how many girls he talked to this way. ”Belgium is nice,” Elise agreed with another small nod. “I’ve seen many girls who are prettier than me though.” That didn’t just count for Belgium. Elise was satisfied with her looks, but that didn’t mean she never felt insecure when she saw a girl walking by that was far more beautiful than herself.

Elise felt like now was the time to return the compliment, since Lovino wasn’t all that bad looking for himself. “So. Are all Italians as cute as you?” She asked him, leaning a bit forward as her lips formed a small smirk.

Lovino snorted, shaking his head. "A lot of people are just babies who don't like working on things that can't be accomplished with a flick of the wrist and a wave of their wand. Potions are more interesting than most other fields of magic." He shrugged, smiling at her. Meeting other potions people - especially after dealing with Daniel's irrational hatred - was such a nice experience. "Good luck with that. The potions are actually really difficult compared to the fifth year textbook." He loved that aspect of it though. Lovino might hate working hard and actually exerting himself, but potions was the one area where he couldn't help but want to be the best.

He didn't actually talk with a lot of women this way, as most had already heard of his prickly attitude from their male friends and just avoided him. Or they were bitchy and yelled at him for the very first compliment. Shrugging, Lovino let his smile grow a bit. "But not all of them have the wonderfully receptive personality that you have." Did that sound weird? That sounded a little weird to him.

Pausing at her compliment, Lovino coughed and ignored the red tint to his cheeks. It wasn't actually there, it wasn't really that important. "Unfortunately signorina, they're not. I'm truly one of a kind." Of course, shit was also one of a kind considering who it came from and the exact combination of food that made it, so that wasn't really a compliment towards himself. Being one of a kind was never really a good thing.

Elise nodded at him. “I like potions because of the extra effort you need to put into it to accomplish something, instead of just waving your wand all the time,” It seemed Lovino shared her interest in the class, which made her pretty happy. It wasn’t often that she met someone who was as passionate about things like this as herself.

Her excited expression changed into a small half-uncomfortable smirk as he mentioned the difficulty of the potions. “I’ve noticed. These look a lot more complicated than I’m used to. But I like the challenge,” She said as the smile returned to her face. “No better way to learn than to make it a bit hard for yourself, right?”

What Lovino said next lead her to believe that the guy indeed had more experience in talking to women this way. So she wasn’t the first girl he’d tried to flirt with. Maybe this should upset her, maybe it did a little. She chose to ignore that for the time being though, since she was enjoying this conversation, and she didn’t really expect the flirting to turn into something more serious anyway.

Of course Elise didn’t know about Lovino’s thoughts about being ‘one of a kind’, and did think of it as an interesting quality. Being one of a kind meant you were special, unique, not like anybody else. And Elise knew there were enough people who were merely a copy of one another. “One of a kind, huh? Well, lucky me for meeting you then,” A giggle escaped her lips as she gave him a little wink.

He nodded, giving her a small smile. This was a great woman here. "I wish more people had that attitude. There are so many people who just don't want to do hard work, because they think having magic excuses them from that kind of thing." He rolled his eyes, frowning at the thought. He truly hated people who put down potions because they were too much work.

He gave her a reassuring look, smiling softly. "I'm sure you'll succeed with them. You seem like the person who's not afraid to give up after failing. Those are the best kind of people." Lovino shifted a little, uncomfortable with his next suggestion. "And I can help you, if you need it." But god, he hated dealing with people and potions at the same time. He was sure that she was smart enough to not piss him off, but he hated seeing people fail at potions.

Snorting a little, he responded to her wink with a small smirk - not meant as anything arrogant, but certainly not the best response. Lovino was a very one sided flirter; he could flirt with women, but he didn't know what to do when they flirted with him. It was a terrible situation. "Do you think you're lucky?" Oh awkward questions.
